From its abstract roots in Cubism to the political and counter culture movements of Dada and Punk, collage has always been a product of its environment. With the rise of 24 hour media cycles, social networks and search engines, contemporary culture has effectively rendered print media obsolete, creating a virtual boom in discarded paper ephemera for collage artists to examine and reinvent. Through these discarded remnants collage artists have become the archivists and activists of this post modern age, paralleling the frenetic pace in which we live while exposing the voyeuristic and often disjointed nature of popular culture.

From this cultural and historical foundation All That Remains will act primarily as a bridge between the past, present and future, while surveying contemporary collage through a select group of 25 artists exploring a variety of techniques and formats. Each artist however will be asked to submit work based loosely on the following metaphors: memory, obsession, connections, disenchantment and revelations. These curated themes will provide the necessary conceptual framework while presenting a deeper examining of both collage, its conceptual heritage and the analogous sensations created by modern expectations.

In keeping with the situational history of photomontage, the site-specific curatorial project Ugly Art Room is exhibiting All That Remains at Picture Farm, a working photography studio. The ever-fluctuating history of collage finds itself on the walls of a room that also redefines itself for changing needs. Both the gallery and art within have the capacity to re-imagine situations ranging from commercial use to radical experimentation. The works selected spotlight the currency of this reshaping discipline, with a reshaping history, in a reshaping space.

‘An Anna Blume’ (1919) is the most successful sound poem from the ‘Merz’ series of the German Dada artist Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948). It was on the ground of the syllable ‘Merz’ from the word ‘Kommerz’ that Schwitters developed an aesthetic both of collage and of phonetic, textual, and graphic segmentation that became one of the key contributions to German Dada. The original poem ‘An Anna Blume’ comprises shrill and ludicrous exclamations and simultaneously reveals a florid homage. It was received as a hybrid between a parody of a love poem, an emblem of the chaos and madness of the era, as well as a harbinger of a new poetic language.

In the legacy of Schwitters and his ‘Merz’ concept the exhibition ‘From Anna Blume’ presents young Berlin-based artists who work in the ‘Merz’ aesthetic of fragmented sound, text, and visual collage. In today’s artistic practice, collage art is omnipresent. Ranging from photo-based to paper collages onto installational assemblages, artists work in this medium and reveal the variety and multiplicity of histories, cultures, and influences that shape our contemporary society. This show presents a selection of female artists who work in this very medium. Similarly to the attempt of Kurt Schwitters to portray the chaos of his times, the artists in this show use the collage as a means of expressing emotional, formal, historical, and political interests and tendencies or aim at distorting and challenging the viewer’s perception. Instead of being the passive object of admiration and enabler of Dadaist poetry as the imaginary character of Anna Blume in Schwitters’ poem, in this exhibition women artists act as agents through their work.

The Spring Session is oriented to the artist who has a body of work and wants to take it to

the next level. The 3 day group editing workshop is dedicated to guiding each participating

artist towards solidfying their body of work through discussions on sequencing, editing and

critiquing.The workshop will be led by a leading arts professional.

After the Editing Workshop, the presentations will be made over a series of 3 days and will

consist of a series of artist lectures, studio visits, publishers who will present their small

presses and also a round table discussion about on-demand publishing.

Finally, the portfolio critiques end the 10 day Session. Based on the idea of the classic portfolio

reviews, the critique structure is a chance for each individual artist to have a conversation

with a group of 4 to 5 arts professionals who have been carefully chosen based on their

expertise in the field.

I am particularly happy to welcome the artist April Gertler whose work appears online in December 2010 and rounds up the first year for Diary Projects. Particularly happy because it was April's project, '38', (2008) that inspired me to make my 2009 Diary Project, which has since led to this year's continuation - showing international artists. So - April, THANK YOU for the inspiration!

The concept for The Ninety9 Project is that April will upload a new work (edition of 2) at 5pm (Berlin time) every 3 days over the course of the month of December. Each work in the edition will be 99 euros.

A Happening at the Larry Clark exhibition opening

Justine Yvel and C. Bagarre peformed a happening at the Museum of Modern Art Paris during Larry Clark's opening, and I was the photographer. In protest of the ban made by the city of Paris, not allowing 18 year olds entrance into the show - when some of the models in the show were possibly not even 18 when they had their photographs taken - the happening was meant to call into question issues of censorship.

THE MISTAKE

Mistakes are commonly confused with failures: they are made identical with the results of unsuccessful realizations of the ideas that drove them into being (Intention). Artistic production also tends to be subordinate to this reduction: there is always a Plan, that the artist follows coherently, step-by-step, until the realization finds its final form. The difference to 'everyday' working processes appears simply to reside in the person of the artist: that they have a much wider palette of productive possibilities- they are 'creative'.

A mistake however, understood as a break in this creative process, presents an interesting opportunity: a point of departure for a dialogue between the result (the unplanned object), and its reception; offering us the chance to more closely observe, review and analyse the customarily internalised and automated mediation process (how does an object come to be taken as art?).

Such a dialogue is not without consequences, demanding after all an adjustment to our habitual modes of thinking (our expectations as a would-be critical authority), forcing us to alter our position vis-à-vis the object- this holds for the artist as well as spectator.

For the artist come first and foremost questions around their authorship. Are they still the author of this result, and does the object necessarily carry their signature? Or do they disclaim that authorship, but nevertheless give the object art-object status via a straight declaration? Or do they simply refuse any further involvement with the defective result?

The spectator, on the other hand, has to try to understand their relation to the object (and to the reaction of the artist to the object). Does the spectator apprehend the artist as author or signatory, even without their assent? Or does the spectator dismiss the object as an artwork, even if the artist has previously decided to declare it such?

What impact do these respective determinations have on the status of objects within the mundane art context? (And on the theoretical plane: does the apparent sufficiency of an artist's declaration for an object to be art run counter to ideas that an artwork finds its final realisation in its reception?)

CELEBRATION! is the title and motto of uqbar’s 3rd anniversary exhibition from April 24 to May 12, 2010. After numerous exhibitions and events – artists' talks, book presentations, workshops, film screenings and lectures – exciting discussions, networking, a bit of work and also a lot of fun now it’s time to party! The curators' collective (Dorothee Bienert, Dortje Drechsel, Marina Sorbello, Antje Weitzel) decided on a simple principle, that pays tribute to all, especially the artists, who made uqbar and its work possible and supported it over the years. All artists the team worked within the last 3 years are now invited to contribute a work of their choice, not exceeding 1 x 1 x 1 meter in its dimensions, and to involve two other fellow artists. CELEBRATION! is an thrilling cocktail of fragile drawings, photographs and site-specific work, up to performances, bringing together more than 50 international artistic positions.
The opening on April 23, 2010 will culminate in a surprise party at Mirror Bar (Mazzarol/Scoufaras/Sehatkar).

FOTOFESTIWAL — the 9TH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Preparations for another edition of Fotofestiwal are in progress. It will be centred around the Main Programme exhibition entitled All my lovin’, devoted to family relations and love. Relationships we engage in, family bonds, people we choose to live with or who just happen to be in our lives, are all great material for illustration of the process of shaping our characters. The presented projects will abound with humour, passion, fight, history and compromise; there will be a bit of nostalgia and lots of reflection.

Other festival events will present a variety of forms of contemporary photography and people who create it. We would like to invite you to tons of photo exhibitions all around town, curators’ slide shows, meetings with authors, lectures, workshops, and a portfolio review. It will all begin at the main festival weekend, 6-9 May. Łódź Art Center will transform into a unique and bustling festival centre. Once again, the whole 19th-century post-industrial complex of old Scheibler’s factories, and its exhibition area of 12,000 m2 will be dedicated to photography in May.

SERENDIPITY

AtelierFrankfurt is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Berlin-based American artist April Gertler, running from February 19 to April 1, 2010.

Serendipity, an exhibition showcasing the artist’s recent work in a range of media including collage, drawing, her own color and black and white photography, found photography, and sculpture, is also an exploration of the sublime power of chance: fortunate coincidences, fortuitous encounters, a certain providence and perhaps even fate.

Gertler’s explorations in various media (she often combines several in one piece) tend to be small in scale and address aspects of everyday life – inner dialogues, moments and details the artist sees, hears, causes or considers as she moves through her days. The many pieces in this new series are a mirror of the quotidian, but taken together, they also point to the larger themes running through the artist’s oeuvre: female empowerment; the meaning of time; the complex dynamics of intimate relationships; nature, especially birds; the anonymity of urban life, and even gentle considerations of aging.

Several diptychs juxtapose one of the artist’s own color photographs with a found image – Gertler often acquires entire photo albums at flea markets, which she then plumbs for pictures, many of them from past decades. Here, the juxtapositions are seamless, at times even painterly; each diptych appears as a fuzzy memory or abstracted reality.

Several narrative lines slowly emerge from the disparate elements. Anchoring them are two powerful statements: on the front wall, a cut-out of a woman’s mouth is connected to a large crystal ball on a pedestal via a rainbow of thin colored threads. On the back wall, the image of a woman’s head – a photograph dating from the 1970s that the artist has enlarged and manipulated – is missing its original eyes, but drawn lines radiate from the blank spaces. Both pieces boldly mix eras and emotions, evoking, perhaps, the women in Russian avant-garde artist Alexander Rodchenko’s iconic photomontages. This is work about the ability to express as well as the limitlessness of vision, the act of truly seeing.

For Gertler, this show represents a public return to collage, a process she often worked in as an art student in California, yet largely set aside during the many intervening years in which she worked primarily in color photography.

In contrast to the split-second chances offered by photography, collage’s mixing, recasting, and reappropriating allows an elastic, slower, perhaps more lasting kind of opportunity. Serendipity, per se. Fortuitous chance. Inherent in the belief in such chance, is, of course, an irrepressible hope that such serendipity has the possibility of occurring just when we least expect it.

The Black Snapper, an online magazine for talented photographers from all over the world,

will be showcasing a mix of talented Belgian photographers selected by Inge Henneman,

curator of the Photo Museum Province Antwerp.

Featured artists are: Vincent Delbrouck, April Gertler, Geert Goiris, Gert Jochems,

Charlotte Lybeer, Dominique Somers and Aram Tanis. Henneman has selected a diverse

group of artists, whose work ranges from documentary to conceptual and photo-collage.

Her week of Belgian artists starts on October 16 (13:00, Amsterdam/Antwerp time) and

runs until October 23.

The Black Snapper magazine website presents a new artist every day, in a dedicated slideshow

comprising up to twenty images. Weekly selections are made by guest curators.

A worldwide community of photography professionals and experts supports the project.

Picture Berlin, a photography-based residency program, will segue into the current Berlin art scene. Over the course of the program the participants will culturally investigate Berlin while considering their own experiences as an artist, traveler and observer in a city that is famous for it’s continued redefinition.

A dense schedule will mix museum visits, gallery tours, historical site visits, and artist studio visits, in combination with openings, concerts, and lectures in the evening. The participants will also be given photographic assignments which will culminate in a final exhibition. The goal of Picture Berlin is that the participants will have a well-rounded understanding of the Berlin based international art scene when they leave in addition to a portfolio that they can use to further their artistic pursuits.
